Dinner with the AU Classmates

Well, my second grad school conference started today. It was an exhausting but fun day, filled with enough information to make us all real hungry! Here are some of my classmates, including 2 whose native language is Hungarian! Can you believe it, Steve?


今日から日曜日まで、大学院の研修会があります。一日目はやっぱり疲れました！一年ぶりにあの優秀な教授たちの授業を生で受けて本当に光栄です。今晩は５人のクラスメートと夕飯を食べに行きました。ピザが食べたかったけどホテルの近くあるピザハットが閉めちゃったため、トンカツを食べに行った！美味しかった！僕が注文した定食はなんと、トンカツスープだった。初めて食べたけどなんとか美味かった！

House of Hope

Wednesday morning, Pastor Mike and Daniel and I went to the countryside, to a Christian place where the physically and mentally handicapped people. It's called House of Hope. Anyways, every week they go there and serve - doing whatever physical labor is asked of them. This week it was easy work - just picking ripe peppers off some branches. So we did that for the morning and then had lunch with the people. We cleaned the lunch hall and headed out. Normally I think they help in the afternoon as well, but because I needed a ride to the train station, we left early this time. It was a blessed time and reminded me again that Jesus came to serve the people - and to heal and give hope to the sick.


水曜日の朝、マイク牧師とダニエルと田舎の方に行って身体障害や精神障害を抱えている人たちのホームでお手伝いをしました。その場所の名前は「希望の家」だそうです。あそこで毎週、頼まれたことを朝から夕方までやってるらしいです。今回は私がテジョン駅まで行かなければならなかったため、午前だけに労働してお昼食べて掃除して帰りました。けど、その体験の中、イエス様が人々に仕えること、そして病人を癒して希望を与えるために来られたことを改めて覚えました。

Daniel, Nayeon and good Korean food

Like I said, I have been eating a lot of good food since coming to Korea (just yesterday, FYI). Daniel and Nayeon (his lovely lady friend) have taken me out for dinner twice and I had lunch with Pastor Tom and the crew today. And I went out to a few great coffee shops today as well! Here are a few pics of the people and food.


下の投稿にも言ったけど、韓国に着いてから（つまり昨日のよるから）たくさんの美味しいものを食べています！ダニエルとその可愛らしい彼女のナヨンちゃんと２日連続一緒に夕飯を食べに行きました。そして今日のお昼はトム牧師とCCBCの学生たちと一緒だった。それに、今日は２回テジョンの美味しいコーヒーショップに行きました！写真を楽しんで！僕は実物をエンジョイしました！

In Korea With Old Friends!

Well folks, I got to Korea safely! It has been awesome... I arrived, hopped on a bus for almost 3 hours, then waited for Daniel to pick me up... he and his lady friend Nayeon got to the bus stop about 10 minutes after I did, so I just sat and waited and people-watched. Then we met the CCBC crew and headed out to have some dinner - kind of late but I was hungry. So I ate some really delicious soup while getting Korean spice juice on my Mariners jersey! But whatever... good stuff.


Then I went back to Daniel's apartment and talked with Pastor Tom and the Bible college guys, and Daniel's roommate David (a Korean guy who probably likes baseball more than I do!). Got to bed late and woke up too soon! Not really, I got to sleep in a little. Went out for breakfast with Pastor Tom and then hung with the crew in the morning. Unfortunately (for me anyways) they took off for Seoul around noon so I didn't get to chat with them much. But after that, I hung out with Pastor Mike and Daniel, and we did a couple of English classes/Bible classes and then me and Daniel went out for dinner with Nayeon. And oh, I had a few good Korean coffees today, too! Tomorrow's my last day in Daejeon before heading to Seoul for the Anaheim University conference (residential session) - can't wait!


無事に韓国に着きました！空港を出てバスに乗ってテジョンへ向かいました。到着したらダニエルはまだ待ち合わせ場所にいなかった。１０分後に彼女と一緒に来て、ダニエルのアパートに戻ってトム牧師とカルバリーチャペルバイブルカレッジの学生たちに会いました。そしてダニエルとナヨンちゃんと食事しに行きました。大変美味しかったけど僕の城島のユニフォームを汚してしまった。食事の後、ダニエルのアパートにまた戻って、トム牧師と学生たち、そしてダニエルのルームメートのデビッド（野球が大好きな韓国人）とおしゃべりしました。


翌朝（今日のことですが）トム牧師と朝ご飯を食べてからみんなで教会へそしてテジョン駅へ行きました。残念だけどトム牧師たちが今日、ソウルへ行かなければならなかった。ので、お別れをして私たち（ダニエルとマイク牧師）が２つの英会話及びバイブルスタディをしました。それにコーヒータイムをも持ちました。夕飯はまたナヨンちゃんと一緒に食べに行ってその後はまたコーヒータイムを持ちました。明日はテジョンで最後の日になりますが、思いっきり楽しんでソウルでまた大学院の研修会に出席します！それも楽しみです！

Sunday with the Robbs

We decided that since Chuck and Yumi were coming all the way from Okinawa to visit, and since there is not much "Calvary awareness" up here, we would put them to work and have Chuck give the teaching (and Yumi translate). So Chuck taught out of 1 Corinthians 9 and did a great job! We were so blessed to have the Robbs visiting with us - great fellowship and encouragement!

せっかく沖縄から来てくれたので、日曜日の朝礼拝のメッセージをチャックにお願いして由美さんが訳してくれました。すばらしいメッセージと通訳でした！私たちの教会に来ている多和さんが「どのカルバリーチャペルへ行っても教え方が同じ」という事を学ばせたと思います。ロブご夫妻、北海道に来てくれて本当にありがとう！良い交わりの中ですごく励まされました！


空港へ向かう途中、サッポロの名所の一つ（羊ヶ丘）に行きました。あそこに超有名な「ボーイズ・ビー・アンビシャス」を発言したウィリアム・クラークの銅像があります。残念ながら雨が降っていたので長く外にいられなかったけど少しブラブラをして空港へ向かいました。また近いうちに会おうね、チュミ！



Then on the way to the airport, we stopped at a really famous place in Sapporo - Hitsuji ga Oka. A statue of the famous William Clark (he who said "Boys be ambitious" to the young men of Hokkaido University) overlooks the city. It's beautiful, but unfortunately it was raining so we did not spend a lot of time outdoors. Anyways, good times... hope to see you again soon, Chumi!

Prayer Request - ANSWER!

Looks like I got the visa - in record time! On Friday my certificate of eligibility came in the mail, and I have been approved for a 3-year visa as a missionary for Calvary Chapel Sapporo! Just 4 days after we put in the application! Praise the Lord! Thank you all so much for your prayers!!!


早くもビザの認定書が届きました！申し込みを出してわずかな４日後に告知が来ました。奇跡ですね！神様は本当に皆さんの祈りを聞いてくださり早く答えてくださいました！カルバリーチャペル札幌の宣教師としての３年間のビザを獲得しました！主にハレルヤ！そして皆さんの祈りを感謝しています！

Chumi in Yuni

A few days before Chuck and Yumi arrived in Hokkaido, Steve was talking and said, "So what time do Chumi arrive?" We thought it was so funny that now we refer to them by this "one name." After all, the two have become one flesh, right? Reminds me of the "Kayondrew" thing! Anyways, we are so blessed to have Chuck and Yumi Robb here from Okinawa. They have been a huge blessing so far and we will have another day or so with them before they travel back to the south.



We went out for Jingisukan (Genghis Khan) - grilled lamb and cabbage and sprouts. A different place than last time, and probably even a little more delicious! But again, food was not the most important part of the day. By any means. We headed to Yuni again and did a gospel concert. This time the mixer worked so we were "plugged in" and sang 11 songs! Before we started, though, I presented a short devotion about who God is. When I shared Psalm 8:3-4, one of the ladies piped up, "I don't understand that. I mean, I understand the words but I do not believe them." And she asked some really difficult questions, but the Holy Spirit gave me the words to answer her. It was awesome because I went from being startled to slightly nervous to confident in my answer, all with a huge smile on my face. The Lord helped all the way! Then after the concert, Yumi talked to the lady for over an hour about all sorts of things. She even asked us if she had to confess all her sins to us in order to get baptized! Anyways, I really believe salvation is nigh for Sakamoto-san... let's keep praying for her!


チャックと由美が北海道に来る２−３日前に、私たちはちょっとした打ち合わせをしていました。その中で、スティーブが「そういえば、チュミは何時に着くの？」と言ってしまった。あまりにも面白くてこれからロブご夫妻のことをチュミと呼ぶことになった。チュミは水曜日の夕方に着いてからスティーブの手料理を食べて私たちと交わりの時間を割いてくれました。次の日が木曜日だったので、由仁町の伝道の日だった！由仁に行く途中、ジンギスカンを食べに行きました。（伝道をする時に写真を撮る時間がないので、ブログに載せる画像はいつも美味しいものを食べている様子。食欲の強い人、ごめんね！）


とにかく食事じゃなくて伝道がメインということで、ちょっと書かせていただきます。前回はミキサー（音響調整卓）が急に壊れてアカペラで歌うことになったけど今回はちゃんと機能してくれたので１１曲を演奏しました。その前に私が聖書から「神様の本質」について話しました。詩篇８編３−４節を言った時にある人は「納得に行きません。意味が分かりますけど理解できない』と言い出し、僕が驚きながら何を答えたらいいか必死に考えてました。神様が私にその必要な言葉を与えてくださって、なんとかうまく行きました。ゴスペルコンサートの後、由美さんが彼女と長く話して、いろいろ説明してくれた。彼女は最後に「洗礼を受けるためにすべての罪を口で告白しなくてはならないの？』と聞きました。本当に救いは近いと思います！チャックと由美がここに来て神様は大いに働いてくださっています！明日の夕方までいますが、そのうちにまた福音を伝えるチャンスはあるだろうと思います。来てくれてありがとう！そして次回は「遊びに」じゃなくて「移住」だよ！冗談，冗談！

Important Prayer Request - VISA

Hi everyone, I forgot to mention this the other day. On Monday afternoon, I was able to submit the necessary paperwork for my missionary visa! So although the situation was always in the Lord's hands, now there is absolutely nothing I can do about this - it is 100% up to Him and His favour and mercy! Pray that God would give me peace in my heart as I wait for His will to be more fully shown to me! Pray that I would continue to do His work with all my heart. Thank you. I will post when I have more information about my visa.


皆さん、こんにちは。先日に言うのを忘れてしまったけど月曜日の午後に宣教師のビザの申し込みを提出しました。前もそうだったけど私の状況は完全に神様の御手の中にあります。私にできることは祈ることだけです。神様の御心が明らかになるまで私が安心して目の前にある業務を果たすことができますように祈っていただきたいです。皆さんの祈りをいつも主に感謝しています。これからもどうぞ、よろしくお願いいたします。入国管理局の連絡次第にまた皆さんにお知らせいたします。

Back 2 Back!

Sorry, I couldn't resist taking a pic like this, boys! It was a fun season of fantasy baseball and I enjoyed the competition... I can't believe I'm the champ again this year! See you in the spring! Start training now, 'cause I'm getting ready to go for a 3-peat!

今年はファンタジーベースボールリーグの４年目ですが、これで私が２回目（２連続）優勝しました！このリーグが長く続くためにネートさんはトロフィを作ってもらったので、優勝したチームは一年間そのトロフィを保管して、次の優勝者に送ることになっています。けど、今年は誰にも送ることなく、私がトロフィをそのまま札幌で保管します！また来年、楽しくやろうぜ！

Genghis Khan - The Food, Not the Man!

Most people in the West know about the menacing, dominating historical figure Genghis Khan - the Mongol. But did you know that there is a food (well, a meal, I guess) named after him? It is famous here in Hokkaido, and yesterday we went to a famous Genghis Khan (better pronounced and written Jingisukan) restaurant before heading to Yuni. Needless to say, the grilled lamb and mutton was incredible and very filling... but more importantly, the Yuni ministry:

We got there in plenty of time to set up the equipment for the gospel concert in the pastry shop, as we have been doing almost every Thursday these days. Last week when I went and shared a bit of the Word with the owner, she was very intrigued and I said, "Do you think it would be OK if I shared at next week's concert before we begin?" And she said, "For sure, please do!" So I prepared a short devotional/message out of Matthew 11:28-30. But anyways, as we were preparing, Steve's amp just stopped powering up. So we could not get any juice, and instead of doing 12 songs with great orchestration, we sang 4 songs acapella. Fortunately we had numbers (5 of us) so we were able to get through the songs alright. I think it was a blessed evening despite the technological failure. (Stupid Satan! But then, I guess God allowed it so it's all good!) Mihoko was able to share the gospel with one of the ladies who came, as well! Praise the Lord!



皆さん、ジンギスカン知ってますか？人物じゃなくて食べ物！（このブログは食べ物が中心です！というのは冗談だけどけっこう食べ物の話が多いかも）昨日は由仁町に行く前に長沼町の有名なレストランに行ってたくさんの羊肉を食べました！すごく美味しくてたまらなかった！止まらなかった！けどその日のメインは食べ物じゃなくて伝道だった。


いつものように木曜日に由仁町に行って伝道をします。今回は２人のお客さんを連れて５人でゴスペルコンサートを催そうとしたんだけど、楽器やAV機能を設定する時にアンプの電源が付かなくてアカペラのコンサートになっちゃった。けど、それは神様が許されたことで、賛美歌を歌う前に私は少し御言葉を分かち合えた。マタイ１１：２８−３０からで、メッセージを聞いてくれた一人は以前にクリスチャンスクールに通ってたと言って、ミホコさんがその人に福音を伝えることができました。

神様はすべてをご存知ですべてを統べ治めていることを改めて理解しました。
