Keeping in Touch

We just came back from two weeks back in Canada (and a couple short forays into the northern States). It was so awesome seeing family and friends again. We were blessed by countless people along the way. (Alright, you got me. If I tried, I could actually count them. But I'd rather not put a number on the blessings... I am sure I will miss a few if I try to put them all in a box and count and label them.)

Of course, the best part about being in Canada is the food. No, just kidding! It's the people... and family tops the list. This year, I am going to try to keep in better touch with my family. One thing that I did this time, though, was to introduce something Japanese to two particular people, hoping somehow they will catch the fever, and practice, and while I practice the same things here, we can compare notes, techniques, and good results. So without further ado, here are the things I am sharing with people back home:

1) With my nephew, a toy/art called "kendama" -- I gave him one, and he seems to really like it, and so does his dad, for that matter! Here's what it's supposed to look like:

And here's what I look like doing it, so far. (I just bought mine two days ago, and have not had much chance to fiddle with it yet.)

2) With my mom, a technique for health called long breathing. I dozed off in front of the TV about a month ago, and when I woke up, my wife was practicing this in the living room. (The guy founder was featured on a TV show and was demonstrating it to the nation.) It looks (and sounds) kind of funny, but the results are supposedly astounding! Here's a demonstration done by the founder of the technique:

And here's me doing it. Sorry for not being brave enough to shed my shirt and wear spandex shorts. Perhaps when my body looks more like his, I'll make the switch.

Anyways, that is how I hope to "build friendship" with my family and share hobbies with them a little better. What do you all think???

Keep on Running

I feel like the blog has gotten a little stagnant. I have not updated in awhile. Some things that are going on are not worth reporting at all, and others are so big that I don't feel the blog is the right forum for them. So for those of you who are "in" -- you know who you are because you know what's really going on -- and for those of you who are just casual observers -- here's a little insignificant update.

I am running again in 2011... trying to be consistent but not always having huge success. However, today I ran my usual route (which is about 3 miles / 4.8km) and did it in record time! I'm not sure the exact time, but it was around the 23-minute mark. That puts me about a full minute faster than my previous best! I attribute it to my recent weight loss. I am proud to say that somehow I have lost approximately 1/7 of my body weight since last November. Now the goal is to keep that weight off for good! So as my blog title says, I will "keep on running."

Hockey Night in Sapporo

After a hot start to the season, the Sapporo Godzillas have now lost two straight games. And badly. Still, hockey is a lot of fun! I want to get some practice time in, or just work on my positioning or something. Keep on cheering for us, people... and pray for the souls of my teammates who do not know Jesus yet.

No More Running in 2010...

I know I have reported snow and the end of running season here before, but this time I think it's for real. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the weather forecast for Sapporo for this week:

So I saw that today was going to be a nice day (and it is) and decided to go for one last run. Have I ever told you I hate running? Anyways, what's done is done. It's been a great year for me when it comes to running... lots of new accomplishments, records, and equipment. I can only hope that somehow, I will keep this up in 2011. This winter will be my longest layoff from running since I started back in June of last year.

The Beauty of Sapporo - Nijuyonken Park

Not sure if anyone else would consider Nijuyonken Park a beautiful part of Sapporo - it's hardly any different from any other park. But I will say that it was nice to discover it - a mere 3-4 minute blade from my apartment, and it has a baseball field and playing area for kids. It was great to just sit and watch kids playing soccer, tag, whatever.

I think if I had come here a couple of weeks earlier, I would have seen some beautiful foliage! Just the same, it didn't look too bad from where I sat. Today was a beautiful day for blading - sunny and 15C... unexpected after last week's highs of 5C, and especially with winter right around the corner! It's supposed to snow 3 days next week! So I am thankful that God gave me this day to just relax, do a little exercise, get into His Word, and enjoy nature.

The Beauty of Sapporo - Cafe Angel

Today was just a blessed day overall. I woke up early (well, relatively) and got into the book of Exodus. Then breakfast while studying, writing a few meaningful e-mails, and trying to make more contacts in Sapporo. Part of that was visiting the Christian cafe located near one of my workplaces. Cafe Angel is a cute little place where you can just sit and chill and have a good meal or coffee. When I walked in, I went to a table and a guy called over, "You're the guy who came in a few weeks ago, right?" 'Fraid not. But just that was enough to get me talking to him, and it turns out he is a pastor in Sapporo - who speaks good English and has the Holy Spirit in him... I could just tell! Then the guy across from him said, "Hey you went to Canaan Praise Church last Sunday, didn't you?" 'Fraid so. (Not really afraid, though.) So we got to talking as well. Then the server came along and she said, "Hey, you're Sakiko's friend, right?" 'Fraid so. (Again, kidding.) And then another server comes along and says, "How you going?" (What? Japanese guy speaking with a thick Australian accent? Believe it!) So anyways, my time at Cafe Angel was filled with cool encounters.

Then I went running (no snow means keep trying to run) and after that went out for dinner with my English student, Shota. Overall it was an outstanding day. Thank you, Lord! And you better believe I will be back at Cafe Angel soon - great place to hang out! Full design points on the cake!

More of the Same?

Earlier this month, I posted about improving my running time, and about receiving stuff in the mail. Well, I guess "whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance" (Matthew 13:12)! Check this out! Thanks for the cookies, Teppei! Thanks for the legs, Lord!

The Numbers Don't Lie

Last month I posted a short video talking of how I would resume my "running career." Or at least, running as a way to stay in shape. (Or get into shape!) Well, I have been running somewhat consistently since then (I missed a few days but overall I'm sticking to it) and the numbers don't lie! My time a month ago was 26:54 and today I ran it in...

Running Again

Geez, I am so sick of always quitting everything that I start! Last year around the beginning of July, I started running 3 times a week... and stuck it out quite faithfully until I moved away from Okinawa. Then I tried to at least do a little running while I was back in Winnipeg for a month, but since returning to Japan, I have not run much at all. I was rollerblading and running a bit, but then quit. Well, it's time to get BACK AT IT! So here I am... check the video for my full thoughts.
